MSU 2010: Course overview

Mitrovica Summer University will be held between July 16th and 31st July 2010. Continuing with the original format, the program for MSU 2010 will bring together local and international professors and students, providing an opportunity to learn and share experiences. During the Mitrovica Summer University 2010 six courses will take place on the following topics:

•    Cultural Heritage – course content to be published

•    Slavistic Studies

Ruthenia literature – the youngest Slavic literature

Course description and learning outcomes:
Student should gained historical overview about the Ruthenia arrivals, their interaction with society, cultural, language and religiously surroundings. They will learn about different genre of literature as well. Course will include beginning of the art literature in the period between Worlds Wars, role of the most popular authors from that period and their writing. This course will also include lectures regarding development of mentioned literature upon World War II social realism development of the modern literature. The aim of this course will be providing necessary information about the occurrence and stream of modern Ruthenium literature.

Narrative description of course contents:
•    Historical introduction about Ruthenia’s in Serbia
•    Cultural heritage – oral literature and folk tradition
•    The beginnings of art literature and literature between World’s War (1st and 2nd)
•    Literature after World War II, development of modern literature

•    Diplomacy and Communication

Narrative course description:

Diplomacy refers to a communication system through which representatives of states, international or global actors express and defend their interests, state their grievances, issue threats and ultimatums. Communication is an essential aspect of diplomacy. The course will distinguish a number of pertinent dimensions of the communicative aspects of diplomacy and will offer examples taken from different eras and geographic regions. Course also includes analyses of the basic aspects of diplomatic communication, gathering and transmission of information, as well as two important options in the diplomatic repertoire: verbal versus nonverbal and public versus private communication.

Learning objectives:

The course has the aim of providing theoretical framework and practical experiences necessary to learn the principles of diplomacy and communication applied in any kind of situation and working environment. Great importance is given to the course on practical experience through role playing and simulations of crises at local and international level.

•    European Integrations and Western Balkans
Course description and learning objectives:
Aim of this course is to show the main stages of EU enlargement with the ascent of comparative study of CEE and Balkan countries integration, catching up necessity of political and economic transformation for developing countries, independently of the result and speed of their integration.

Narrative course description:

This course will include:
•    EU Enlargement in 90th of XX century
•    Process of integration of Central European States.
•    Activity of regional initiatives. EU in management of the ethnic conflicts on the territory of former Yugoslavia.
•    Stability Pact for South Eastern Europe and Process of Stabilization and Association.
•    Socio-political situation in countries and socio-political situation in countries-founders of EU
•    Perspectives of further enlargement

•    Marketing in Digital Age

Narrative course description:
Contest of this course is divided in three modules:

1.    Traditional marketing functions;
2.     Definition, purpose and scope of digital marketing, understanding the digital marketing customer, Gathering and managing digital data, digital Marketing communication tools, marketing through online games, Mobile marketing.
3.    Creating a digital marketing strategy defining participant print and goals, creating digital platforms generating awareness and influence data.

Learning objectives:
Students should be able to understand new challenges faced by marketers in the digital age. At the end of the course students should:
a. Learn how traditional marketing functions need to be changed in the new era;
b. Know about the digital channels;
c. Be able to plan a digital marketing strategy for a company.

•    Sustainable Architecture
What is sustainability and what does it mean when a building is called GREEN? What is the role of the building industry in the debate about climate change? What can we learn from nature and how can we reduce the waste capacities? What is done so far and what needs to be achieved?
The building industry has a highly relevant potential to reduce the impact mankind has on the environment. In the debate on sustainability it is necessary to understand the meaning of terms and definition in order to distinguish marketing strategies from ecologic effective measures. As part of a team of planers an architect needs to be informed about the current processes and guide in the right direction.
The course aims in a general understanding about the ecological parameter in architecture. When completing the course the students should be able to consider ecological aspects in the design stage and appraise measures concerning the sustainable relevance. They will have an overview about the current building certificates and understand the basis of the most relevant ones.
The lectures will give an overview about the general topic and present different approaches to it. The assignment will contain a theory and a design task. They will be presented at the end of course.

Each course will be taught by an international professor and a local co-professor. Successful participants will gain an official Certificate of the Mitrovica Summer University which includes between 3 and 4 ECTS credits. All the courses will be taught in English some with simultaneous translation into Serbian.
